A root canal treatment (RCT) is a dental procedure to save an infected or damaged tooth by removing the pulp (nerve and blood vessels), cleaning and disinfecting the inside, and then filling and sealing it. The "best" description emphasizes it saves the tooth, relieves pain, and involves removing infected material, cleaning the canals, and sealing them with a filling or crown. Advanced technology, like X-rays and specialized tools, is used to ensure a thorough and effective procedure.
Step-by-step overview of an RCT
- Diagnosis and numbing: The dentist takes an X-ray to check the extent of the infection and administers local anesthesia to numb the area.
- Access and removal: A small opening is drilled into the tooth to access the pulp, which is then removed using specialized files.
- Cleaning and shaping: The inside of the tooth is thoroughly cleaned and disinfected. The canals are shaped to prepare them for filling.
- Filling and sealing: The empty canals are filled with a biocompatible material, typically gutta-percha, and sealed to prevent future infection.
- Restoration: A temporary filling is placed, which is later replaced with a permanent filling or, often, a crown to protect the tooth and restore its function.
Why RCT is recommended
- It prevents the need for tooth extraction.
- It relieves pain caused by deep decay or infection.
- It protects surrounding teeth and gums from infection spreading
