Rahar Labs Provide Blood Tests for Typhoid
- Widal Test (Agglutination Test):
- How it works: Mixes patient's blood serum with Salmonella antigens. If antibodies are present, they clump (agglutinate) the antigens, creating visible clumps.
- Types: Detects antibodies to 'O' (somatic) and 'H' (flagellar) antigens.
- Pros: Widely used, affordable, quick results.
- Cons: Can be less specific, potentially giving false positives/negatives, especially early on or after vaccination.
- Typhoid Test:
- How it works: A rapid test that detects specific IgM and IgG antibodies to S. Typhi.
- Pros: Faster, more specific than traditional Widal, good for early diagnosis.
- Blood Culture:
- How it works: The most accurate method; grows S. Typhi bacteria from a blood sample.
- Pros: Gold standard for confirming diagnosis.
- Cons: Takes longer to get results than rapid antibody tests.
What to Expect During the Test
- Rahar Labs professional draws a small blood sample from a vein in your arm.
- You usually don't need to fast beforehand.
- Results for Widal/Typhidot are often available the same day, while blood cultures take longer.
Interpretation
- Positive (High Titer): Elevated levels of antibodies (O & H) or IgM/IgG antibodies suggest current or recent infection.
- Negative: No significant clumping or antibody presence indicates no infection.
