Scaling and root planing (SRP) is a deep dental cleaning procedure to treat periodontal disease by removing plaque, tartar (calculus), and bacteria from the tooth roots and shrinking the "pockets" that form between the gums and teeth.

The Procedure Explained

• Scaling: Targets tartar and plaque both above and below the gumline using manual instruments or ultrasonic scalers.
• Root Planing: Smooths the root surfaces of your teeth, removing infected layers and creating a clean, even surface so healthy gums can naturally reattach.
• Pocket Reduction: SRP targets periodontal pockets to reduce their depth (ideal pockets are \(\le 3\text{ mm}\)), which prevents bacteria from accumulating and promotes tissue healing.

What to Expect During and After

• Anesthesia: Dentists or periodontists typically apply a local anesthetic to numb your gums and prevent discomfort during the deep cleaning.
• Recovery: Gums will likely feel tender with minor bleeding and irritation for a few days. Complete healing and reduction in pocket depth take about 3 to 6 weeks.
• Pain Management: Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen are usually sufficient for post-treatment soreness.

When is Surgery Required?

Scaling and root planing is usually a non-surgical (closed) procedure performed by a dental hygienist or periodontist. However, for deeper pockets (typically \(\ge 5\text{ mm}\)), your dentist might recommend an open flap procedure or pocket reduction surgery. This involves temporarily folding back the gum tissue to allow the clinician direct access to clean severely deep roots.
