Extraction treatment

Extraction treatment, usually meaning dental extraction, is the removal of a tooth from its socket due to severe decay, infection, impaction (wisdom teeth), or overcrowding, often using local anesthesia, with simple extractions for visible teeth and surgical ones for impacted teeth requiring gum incisions. The procedure involves numbing, loosening the tooth, careful removal (sometimes sectioning it), cleaning the site, and stitching if needed, followed by recovery with pain relief, soft foods, and avoiding straws or smoking to promote healing.

Reasons for Extraction

• Periodontal Disease: Bone loss making teeth mobile.

• Severe Decay/Damage: Tooth beyond repair or heavily fractured.
• Infection: Infection (pulpal/periapical) that can't be resolved otherwise.
• Impaction: Teeth (like wisdom teeth) stuck under the gum or bone.
• Overcrowding: Creating space for orthodontics.

Types of Extractions

• Simple Extraction: Tooth is visible; loosened with instruments and pulled.

• Surgical Extraction: For impacted or broken teeth; requires gum incision and bone removal; may involve tooth sectioning.

The Procedure (General Steps)

• Anesthesia: Local anesthetic; possibly sedation (nitrous oxide, IV) or general anesthesia.

• Exposure/Removal: Incisions if needed; tooth loosened and lifted, sometimes cut into pieces.

• Cleaning: Socket cleaned, irrigated.

• Closure: Stitches (sutures) may be placed.

• Bleeding Control: Gauze applied.

Aftercare & Recovery

• Manage Pain: NSAIDs (ibuprofen), as recommended.

Control Swelling: Ice packs.

• Diet: Soft foods; avoid hard/crunchy items.

• Oral Hygiene: Gentle salt water rinses after 24 hours; careful brushing.

• Avoid: Straws, spitting, smoking, alcohol, hot drinks to prevent blood clot disruption (dry socket).
