Rahar Labs ( A Unit of Rahar Health Care)
A liver function test (LFT) is a group of blood tests that measure specific enzymes, proteins, and other substances to evaluate the health of the liver. These tests help diagnose and monitor liver damage or disease, and they are often included in routine health check-ups or performed when symptoms like jaundice or chronic fatigue appear. Common parameters measured include ALT, AST, albumin, and bilirubin.
What LFTs measure
- Enzymes: These tests measure enzymes that leak into the blood when the liver is damaged.
- Alanine Transaminase (ALT): An enzyme that rises in the blood when the liver is damaged.
- Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST): An enzyme found in the liver, heart, muscles, and brain. Elevated levels may indicate liver damage, or issues with muscles or the heart.
- Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP): An enzyme that helps assess the health of the liver's bile ducts and can indicate liver inflammation or bone disease.
- Proteins: The liver produces several important proteins.
- Albumin: The main protein produced by the liver. A low level can indicate the liver isn't functioning properly, but can also be caused by malnutrition, kidney disease, or infection.
- Prothrombin Time (PT): Measures the time it takes for blood to clot, which can be affected if the liver isn't producing the necessary proteins normally.
- Other substances:
- Bilirubin: A byproduct of red blood cell breakdown. The liver processes it, and if it's not processed correctly, it can build up in the blood, causing a high result and potentially leading to jaundice.
When an LFT is recommended
- As part of a routine or preventive health check-up.
- To investigate symptoms like yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice), fatigue, or dark urine.
- To monitor the effectiveness of treatment for a known liver condition.
- To assess the potential impact of certain medications on the liver.
- If a person has risk factors for liver disease, such as heavy alcohol use, obesity, or hepatitis.
