Professional teeth cleaning, or scaling and polishing, is a dental procedure to remove plaque, tartar (calculus), and stains from teeth surfaces and below the gumline using ultrasonic scalers and hand tools, followed by smoothing the teeth with abrasive paste for a shiny finish, preventing gum disease, decay, and bad breath, and leaving teeth feeling smooth and looking brighter.

Scaling

• What it is: The removal of hardened plaque (tartar/calculus) and soft plaque using ultrasonic vibrations and high-pressure water, or by hand instruments, from all tooth surfaces, including above and below the gumline.
• Purpose: To eliminate bacteria and deposits that cause gum inflammation (gingivitis) and periodontal disease.

Polishing

• What it is: Smoothing the tooth surface with a slow-rotating rubber cup or bristle brush and abrasive paste, or using an air-polishing device (water, air, and powder).
• Purpose: To remove residual stains, smooth out minor imperfections, and make teeth shiny, which discourages new plaque from sticking.
