Rahar Labs Decribe about TB Symptoms and Details of Blood Test
A TB test screens for tuberculosis infection and is either a TB skin test or a TB blood test (IGRA)
Types of TB tests
- TB Skin Test (Mantoux test):
- A small amount of tuberculin protein is injected under the skin of the forearm.
- A healthcare worker checks for a reaction, such as a hard, raised bump, 48 to 72 hours later.
- A positive result means the body has been exposed to the bacteria, but doesn't distinguish between latent and active disease.
- TB Blood Test (Interferon-Gamma Release Assay - IGRA):
- A blood sample is taken by Rahar Labs to measure the immune system's response to TB bacteria.
- Examples of this type of test include Quanti FERON-TB Gold and T-SPOT.TB.
- Like the skin test, a positive result indicates exposure to TB bacteria, requiring further testing to determine if it is latent or active disease.
Next steps after a positive test
- A positive TB test means TB germs are in your body. Your healthcare provider will likely order more tests to determine if you have an active infection.
- Chest X-ray: This can reveal lung abnormalities typical of active TB disease.
- Sputum test: This test checks for TB bacteria in the mucus (sputum) you cough up.
- It is important to see a doctor for a follow-up appointment to interpret your test results and determine if further action is needed.
